CZ Gemstone Information

"Diamonds are a girl's best friend" However, not everyone can afford to buy diamonds. Cubic Zirconia is considered to be the best man-made diamond for jewelry on the market today. Some people believe diamonds are artificially overpriced. Also, many diamonds are misrepresented and many inexperienced buyers are paying as much as twice what they should be paying.

The price is not the only reason to buy Cubic Zirconia instead of a diamond. Many celebrities are refusing to wear diamond to protest the issues of the "blood diamonds". They are wearing Cubic Zirconia stones instead of diamonds to many gala events.

Also a good quality cubic zirconia can fool some jewelers unless they use their gemologist's tools. When used for jewelry, it is practically identical from the mined diamonds despite its low cost.

With a hardness factor of 8.5, incredible clarity, and exquisite brilliance, the quality of cubic zirconia AAAAA could easily match or surpass expensive diamonds. Cubic Zirconia has several grades. The best is AAAA. Next is AAA which is the most popular grade for jewelry. The last is A which is still on par with a high grade diamond as far as appearance.

Here are a few key features of cubic zirconia which distinguish it from diamond, some observable only under the microscope or loupe, for example:

  • Dispersion: With a dispersive power greater than diamond (0.060 vs. 0.044) the more prismatic fire of cubic zirconia can be seen by even an untrained eye.
  • Hardness: Cubic zirconia has an 8.5 to <9.0 on the Mohs hardness scale vs. a rating of 10 for diamonds.
  • Specific gravity: Cubic zirconia crystals are heavyweights in comparison to diamonds; a cubic zirconia will weigh about 1.7 times more than a diamond of equivalent size.
  • Flaws: Contemporary production of cubic zirconia is virtually flawless,[citation needed] whereas most diamonds have some sort of defect, be it a feather, included crystal, or perhaps a remnant of an original crystal face (e.g. trigons).
  • Refractive index: Cubic zirconia has a refractive index of 2.176, compared to a diamond's 2.417.
  • Cut: Under close inspection with a loupe, the facet shapes of some cubic zirconias appear different from diamonds.
  • Color (or more precisely, the lack thereof): Only the rarest of diamonds are truly colorless, most having a tinge of yellow or brown to some extent. By comparison, cubic zirconia can be made in most cases entirely colorless: equivalent to a perfect "D" on diamond's color grading scale.
  • Thermal conductivity: Cubic zirconias are thermal insulators while diamonds are among the most efficient thermal conductors, exceeding copper. This makes telling the difference between diamond and cubic zirconia quite easy for those with the right instruments.

You can also wear it without worrying about losing it or having it stolen and losing a fortune, because a high quality Cubic Zirconium may cost you $250 while even a low quality diamond of the same size might cost over $2000. The best thing is that no one will know the difference.

Also, if you do buy a diamond, get a certificate from a reliable gem lab. Do not accept a letter from the jeweler. There have been cases where the jewelry gave a letter and when the diamond was sent to GIA, the grading was several grades less on clarity and several grades less on color.

Basically, you can judge a Cubic Zirconia using the same factors that determine the quality of a diamond. The weight (carats), clarity, color, and cut are considered the 4 C's of quality. However, if you have a Cubic Zirconia of an A grade, it is still similar to a high grade diamond such as a VS quality or a least an SI1 quality. All Rayenelli Cubic Zironia are at least AA quality. Most are AAA guality.

    Maintaining Your Jewelry

Quality jewelers use a heavy coat of Rhodium on their jewelry to protect the visual appeal and the shine. While the plating will last indefinitely, the best way to clean your fine sterling silver jewelry is to just use a jeweler's cleaning cloth available at most jewelers. It is best to avoid polishing it with silver polish.
